All you need is a ruler or penny to check your tread depth at home in Conway. Get in touch if you have any questions!

Recommended Tire Tread Depth

Typical tires start off with a tread depth of about 10/32 or 11/32 of an inch (about a third of an inch). However, if you have winter tires or performance tires, the treads may be even deeper for improved traction.

When your tires reach 2/32 of an inch, you’ll know that it’s time to replace your tires, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. If you don’t, driving around Murrells Inlet will be much less safe, and taking steps for total tire care may even extend the life of your tires.

The Penny Test

While a ruler is the most accurate way to check tire tread depth, a penny is another way to measure if you don’t have a ruler handy. Simply follow these steps:

  1. Take the penny and insert if with Lincoln’s head first into the tire tread groove.
  2. Take note of how covered Lincoln’s head is.
  3. If you can see all of Lincoln’s face, then your tires are pretty worn, and it’s time to replace them.
  4. Repeat the process on all four tires and in various locations on each tire. This will give you an idea of uneven wear on your tires.

Other Ways to Check Tire Health

Drivers in the Conway area can also use tools specifically to check tire tread, such as a tread depth gauge or tread wear bars. When you check your tire tread depth, also pay attention to:

  • Visible tire damage
  • Tire rot or disintegration
  • Wheel alignment
  • Tire pressure
